Following a series of meetings between the Head of the Mechina, Rabbi Itamar Cohen, and leading American Rabbis and educators, it became apparent that a program combining Torah study; Jewish philosophy and history; Zionism; love of the Land, and the military, together with their Israeli peers, was likely to be very beneficial for American students.

Target Population

The program is slated for high school graduates interested in studying in an Israeli Yeshiva for a year or more.  The program not only offers Talmudic and Halachic studies, but it is also intensive in such areas as Jewish Philosophy, Hashkafa, Mussar, and Jewish History, as well as special chesed programs, thus making this program different from the traditional yeshiva framework. Experience has shown that many intelligent and talented students excel under such diversified settings. The time that they spend in Israel becomes a life long experience adding to their general growth and intellectual development.

The overseas program at "Magen Shaul" aims to provide these students with those extra elements appropriate to their particular characters, abilities, and needs, while also offering a serious, practical and varied learning program.

The Study Program

For almost a decade, the "Magen Shaul" staff have been developing an intense and varied program of study. The emphasis is in the Bet HaMidrash, on studying Jewish philosophy, Halacha, and Faith, designed to provide the tools and build the students' personality as he grows into adult life, whether in university, the working world, or elsewhere.

Parallel to the Bet Midrash program is a rich program of experiential study, covering Jewish history; the history of Zionism; field trips; adventure challenges, and direct encounters with leading Israeli figures.

What makes the program unique?
:::: Men of Faith: Our aim is to nurture leading Jewish figures who do not see themselves sitting in yeshiva for years, but who do
want to integrate into academic life and other areas of life. Our aim is these young people should develop a high
appreciation and awareness of their faith and Torah observance, combined with a passion for the Land and the People.
:::: Encountering Israelis: The program offers a rare opportunity to live and interact with Israeli peers on a daily basis.
:::: Preparation for Life: Physically, mentally, spiritually.
:::: Personal Attention: One of the Mechina's founding principles is the personal connection developed between the students
       and the staff.
